How to kill a sport in Finland

It has been done before and I’m not surprised if Finland really managed to fuck this up again. Look at Nordic skiing, after all the doping cases, how many truly gets excited about the sport anymore. Now it seems that there are some people and organizations in Finland, trying their best to kill ice hockey.

I think it all started when MTV3 (Finnish tv channel and broadcaster) bought the rights from Yle (Government funded  Broadcaster) last year. It was inevitable that the games will move to channels in which you have to subscribe and pay. In nutshell it means that something that you have watched for free is now something you have to pay for. Not exactly, as they are showing the games for free where Finland is playing.

Then the hockey federation in Finland, which is in my opinion from stone age. Think F1 where Bernie has the rights for the sport, well in Finland we have Kalervo “Kale€” Kummola who steers the hockey in Finland the way he wants. After a successful victory for Finland in 2011, what would be a better idea then put the prices for the tickets as high as possible, of course people will pay….NOT… Didn’t happen, would you pay 150€ for a hockey game you can watch for free from the TV? After 2-4 weeks of denial they decided to change the pricing for the tickets, good job but too late, you lost the trust of people and you won’t get that back any time soon.

Final bit was to ask IIHF to delay their live streaming on YouTube so people are not able to watch hockey from the internet. Now if you know a bit of web this is not the case as you can still find links that will stream it live. Little googling and social media you will end up watching the games live, whether you like it or not. Not sure about the facts but at least according to YLE someone has filed a complaint about the streaming (I have gut feeling that it has something to do with mtv3 as mentioned in the story).  To give you a little bit of background, mtv3 likes IP detection and they don’t allow people to watch their content outside the country. So for me it means that as I live abroad there is no way that I can watch the games live.

What I’m saying is that, if Kummola and the hockey federation has not learned their lesson by now, they should really consider of some very intense actions to improve the situation for the future. It’s not working this way at all and when people are upset the sport will be facing a slow death. It’s just sad to watch and see how this is going to end. It’s time to get some fresh blood and thinking to the hockey federation! Welcome to the 21st century.

Ski Touring for the first time

It’s been quite some time since I wrote something here, so it was definitely time to share what’s been going on. Mainly the reason we haven’t posted anything is because we’ve skied, skied A LOT. Not even sure how many days we’ve managed to do so far…

For those who have no clue what ski touring is, you may want  to check Wikipedia but in a nutshell it means that you tour up to the mountain (where there are no lifts). First you put “skins” on your skis so you won’t slide down and then you need specific bindings to be able to do it with ski boots on, which releases back of your boot (like nordic skiing).

Speed limits are ridiculous in Finland

I have to agree with the WRC codriver Daniel Elena who just complained about the speed limits in Finland. THEY ARE RIDICULOUS! Let me give you an example, a normal highway in France is set to 110 km/h and with sections that are faster are 130 km/h. Now on the other hand in Finland where the traffic ministry is run by retards we have set the speed limit to 80 km/h on a highway. One thing that also pisses me off driving in Finland is that when there is road work going on they start to drop the speed like 10 km before that actual work and then we are talking some occasions from 100 km/h to 40 km/h? Why? In france people automatically drop their speed when you have roadwork and its limited to something like 70-90 km/h and the traffic goes much smoother.

12 hours 1100km Mini is at Home

I made it and what a roadtrip! I think I stopped and refueled 6 times in 12 hours. I drove approx. 200-300km with one tank and then had to stop and get more gas. For lunch and dinner I had Biff, Redbull and water, didn’t want to spend too much time at gas stations.

Great thing about driving 1k is that you really get known the car inside out. I have to say that is the most fun car I’ve ever drove! There’s nothing extra and it goes like a go kart. The car has rust here and there but that’s not the point, I think this will be a never ending project. It was definitely love after the first sight, and we will never sell it, that is something I can guarantee!

Anyways, we will take you for a spin when you visit us. Not sure how it will survive from the winter but at least it has winter tires haha! time will tell and maybe I need a ski rack for it?

The Crazy finn goes for a road trip

This must be the most ultimate drive I’ve ever done. I will be flying over to Germany, Berlin tonight to get a new car. It will not be just another car, this one is the one. It’s actually a car that we will keep and never sell. Tomorrow if everything goes well I’ll be driving an original Mini all the way from Berlin to Annecy. It’s according to google maps something like 11 hours.

To be able to do this you have to be the following:

1. Crazy Finn
2. Crazy about Cars
3. Loves Mini’s
5. Loves driving cars
4. Likes road trips

Nevertheless, I will be shooting the whole thing with my GoPro and create a timelaps from the trip. Looking forward to the trip! wish me luck!

Time to visit Finland

Funland here I come! It’s been 6 months since I left Finland and now I’m going back for a small vacation and wedding that I need to attend. Katja actually took off already and she has been there since Friday evening. I think it’s going to feel weird getting back and look at people and make some cultural comparisons, I think now I’ve been here now long enough to understand the biggest differentiations. It’s definitely great to get back and see all my friends but the question that is in my head is whether I still consider Finland as my home or Annecy. Oh well time will tell…

Nähdään pian!

The country of Strikes

When there is any kind of reason to go strike France will go on strike, that is guaranteed. Strikes are like vacations over here and I’m sure they actually plan a certain amount of “strike vacation” days in the calendar for everyone.

Yesterday, I missed my opportunity… darn… Out of no where, I was walking in our office building and there was people gathering in the middle of the building. I asked my colleague what is going on and he responded “strike”. I thought he was joking and continued my journey to a meeting. I missed my first ever strike haha. It lasted only for 2 hours what I heard.

A Great Firewall of France

Apparently Nicola Sarkozy has not paid attention to what is happening around the middle east. Soon to be the godfather of internet moderation, Sarkozy want’s to control what people will be posting on the web! WTF FRANCE! Are you seriously kidding me? Few minister will have the authority to blacklist URL’s which to me sounds like against human rights and freedom of speech. I really want to see France shutting down Twitter hahahah!

5 months of learning French

It’s true I’m taking French lessons every week and I’ve to say it’s not the easiest language. Living in France is just necessary to speak French otherwise you can’t really operate. I can tell you that google translate is your best friend! Anywho my 5 months here, the first word I’ve properly adapted was putain! The thing is that at the office whenever someone says that I will repeat it immediately. You will hear it in different kind of sound levels depending on the context.

This video explains what I mean!

French people don’t give a shit about cars

Finding a car in France that doesn’t have a scratch is impossible. Washing cars is like waste of time and not necessary. Parking a car is dangerous when someone parks next to you and opens the door, I can assure you it will hit your car. Summary people just don’t respect other peoples cars nor their own. For me this is just a nightmare, when I try to make sure our car is in to notch.
